DUO-VISION
A NEW SCREEN TECHNIQUE

Two separate action sequences are shown on screen at the same time through a unique motion picture projection process called Duo-Vision introduced in Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer's mystery thriller, 'Wicked, Wicked." Writer-producer-director Richard L. Bare, who deveioped Duo-Vision, says its main purpose is to depict simultaneous parallel action, but the process also lends itself to showing cause and effect, flashbacks in time, or visions of future events without abrupt interruption of the main story line,Randolph Roberts is shown peering through field glasses on left side of screen while on right side Diane McBain is preparing for a shower.

A new and exciting motion picture experience - two action sequences side by side on the same screen - is introduced in Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer's action thriller, "Wicked, Wicked," through a unique projection process called Duo-Vision. There is a scene in "Wicked, Wicked," for example, where Tiffany Boiling is preparing to retire for the night. On the other half of the screen a killer is shown making his way toward her hotel

room. The double story technique which is followed through the movie was developed by Richard L. Bare, who wrote, produced and directed "Wicked, Wicked" with William T. Orr as executive producer. "We picked 'Wicked, Wicked' for the introduction of Duo-Vision for two reasons," Bare explains. 'It is a suspense drama of the psycho-killer genre and the entire action is laid in an old seaside resort hotel. The plot and the setting combined beautifully to make our dual screens work. "Although split screen sequences have been seen in the past and are still popular for such presentations as sports telecasts, "Wicked, Wicked" marks the first time that an entire movie has been filmed with parallel images," Bare says. "Although primarily it serves to depict simultaneous action," the director continues, "Duo-Vision also lends itself to showing truth and untruth, flashbacks in time, visions of the future or cause and effect without abrupt interruption of the story's main continuity. "As applied to 'Wicked, Wicked' the Duo-Vision technique involves an active screen and a passive screen, meaning that dialogue comes from only one screen at a time while silent footage unreels on the other so there is no dialogue confusion." Besides Miss Boiling, the "Wicked, Wicked" cast includes David Bailey, known to millions of TV viewers through those Mitchum deodorant commercials; newcomer Randolph Roberts and such familiar names as Edd Byrnes, Arthur O'Connell, Madeleine Sherwood, Scott Brady, Roger Bowen and Diane McBain. Most photography was in and around a famous southern California landmark, the Hotel del Coronado in San Diego.
