Daughters of Joy

1900

Susan leads her troupe of players in a rolicking Tom Jones style farce to depose the Governor of the West Phalian town of Giessen. Susan (Terry Torday) and Paul (Mike Marshall) are performing in France in 1810 when it becomes apparent that the local Governor is planning on overthrowing the King. When visiting the local inn, Susan convinces the dying owner to leave the inn to the towns people rather than letting the corrupt Mayor acquire it. Susan soon acquires the inn and it becomes the meeting place for the citizens in their collective effort to overthrow the Governor.

Susan sends one of her actors to infiltrate the Governor's soldiers while Paul tries to create as much trouble as possible while rallying the citizens. Susan's plan is simple: take advantage of the Governor in bed, a widely known weakness of his. The troupe of players soon acquire the aid of the Mayor's son, a well-meaning lad who has his eye and intentions on one of the girls. Together they write and publish limericks

declaring the Governor's incompetency and intention to overthrow the King. The Governor soon discovers that Paul is creating the aggitation throughout the countryside and has him arrested, not before a daring chase through the city. The

Governor is too concerned about getting in bed with Susan, however, and his Commander of the Guard decides to hang Paul as an example to the citizenry. The crisis at hand is now to save Paul. Susan's spy within the army rides to get the King while Susan devices a diabolical plan to prevent the hanging.

Everyone knows that the Governor and his men would rather acquire a woman than administer the country, so Susan, with the aid of all the women in the town, plan on obliging. The plan is simple: all the women will get the soldiers and the town's officials in bed, while the men of the troupe steal their trousers. Everyone realizes the Governor and his men will not venture out without their trousers, therefore Paul will not hang.

The day of the hanging arrives and Paul finds himself alone on the scafford, while all the politicians are looking for their trousers, including the Mayor and Governor. The actor posing as the spy arrives with the King as the paritless Governor is on his balcony ordering the execution. Susan explains the townspeople's plight to the King, he is taken by the beauty of Susan, and Paul goes free. Realizing the Governor is corrupt, he places him in jail and appoints the baby-faced Mayor's son to the governorship. Susan, Paul and their troupe have saved the country and everyone returns to the inn for the celebration.
