Battle Beneath the Earth

1974

Battle Beneath the Earth is a new spine-tingling thriller from MGM offering marvelous escapist entertainment for adults and youngsters alike. \Tividly photographed in Technicolor with incredible "special effects" wizardry by two-time Academy Award-winner Tom Howard, this drama of the impossible-made-probable in a world where anything can happen has a topnotch cast headed by Kerwin Mathews, Viviane Ventura, Robert Ayres and Peter Arne.

The story tells of a Red Chinese invasion plot against the United States which comes to light when U.S. authorities discover a maze of tunnel complexes dug beneath the major population centers and defense installations.

Defense chiefs also learn that the subterranean invaders have stockpiled nuclear weapons which are being delivered into the tunnels via a single supply shaft under the Pacific Ocean. They realize that their only chance of stopping the Chinese is to cut this supply link. Naval Commander Shaw (Kerwin Mathews) is detailed to head the American counter-attack which will use an extinct Hawaiian volcano as its base.

Tila Yung (Viviane Ventura), a beautiful geologist,

is assigned to the mission together with seismologist Dr. Arnold Kramer (Peter Arne), who also constructs a boring machine equipped with a Laser-beam to speed the attack.

The events that follow offer a series of hair-raising adventures in which the Chinese pit their cunning and ingenuity against that of the Americans, leading to a dramatic entrapment in the main supply tunnel and a shattering climax involving the detonation of an atomic bomb.

Among the fascinating aspects of Battle Beneath the Earth are the revelation of some of the most intricate and advanced 'scientific techniques ever deployed for a movie thriller, among them the laser-borers by which the Chinese invaders are able to cut through the hardest rock sub-strata with the ease of a hot knife through butter.

Also fascinating is the pneumatic tube system employed by the enemy by which their troops are conveyed over vast subterranean distances in a giant-sized version of the pneumatic tubes used in post-offices and department stores today.

Battle Beneath the Earth is based on an original story and screenplay by L. Z. Hargreaves, produced by Charles Reynolds and directed by Montgomery Tully. The picture's executive producer is Charles Vetter, Jr., the man who wrote and produced "First Man Into Space," a brilliant forerunner of the screen's most successful science-fiction dramas.

With Battle Beneath the Earth he has another film entertainment that will keep audiences rooted to the edge of their seats.
