Night Walker

1964       Robert Taylor

"The Night Walker"

When Irene Trent (BARBARA STANWYCK) talks in her sleep in a manner indicating erotic dreams, her husband Howard (HAYDEN RORKE), a blind electronics engineer, is convinced she has a secret lover.

For his attorney, Barry Morland (ROBERT TAYLOR), Howard plays tapes he has made of Irene's sleep-talking, hints he suspects she is having an affair with Barry, who flatly denies it.

Irene eaves-drops, when Howard leaves tells Barry she dreams repeatedly of a man she doesn't know - and who resembles Barry.

Later Howard accuses Irene of planning a rendezvous, goads her until at the height of their quarrel, when he strikes at her blindly with his cane, she leaves the house. Smelling smoke from his laboratory upstairs, Howard goes to investigate. As the lab door clangs shut behind him there is an explosion.

Not until the inquest of Howard's death is closed does Irene return to the house, where a police officer padlocks the door to the ruined lab, tells her Howard's body was never

found.

Trying to sleep there that night, Irene is aroused by a tapping cane, follows the sound, hears the lab door close and an explosion inside. She enters, sees Howard in the smoke, his face hideously burned.

Awakening in her bed, she checks the lab door. It is padlocked, just as the officer had left It. Next day she tells Barry of the nightmare, and that she's moving to an apartment at the rear of a beauty shop she has owned since before her marriage.

There she is greeted by Hilda (ROCHELLE HUDSON) and meets Joyce (JUDITH MEREDITH), a pretty new employee.

That night, awakened by a rapping on the apartment window, Irene arises and admits The Dream (LLOYD BOCHNER) , who murmurs endearing and somehow familiar phrases as he takes her in his arms.

The next evening at dinner, when Barry shows a personal interest in Irene, she tells him he has a rival - the Dream has returned. She resents Barry's suggestion that she see a doctor, and when he asks her if she killed Howard, she slaps him and leaves the cafe.

Later the Dream appears, takes her to his apartment, then to a small, dimly-lit chapel where an eerie wax-faced cleric marries them before dummy-like witnesses and a grotesque organist.

Suddenly alone with the wax figures, Irene opens the chapel door. Howard stands there, his face horribly scarred . ...
