Dracula 2: Prince of Darkness

1966       Christopher Lee

Dracula rises from his murky grave, after 10 years of entombment, to terrorize everyone in the neighborhood, in the horror film, "Dracula, Prince of Darkness," a 20th Century-Fox release in DeLuxe Color which opened in 1966. Christopher Lee again stars as the bloodthirsty gentleman from Transylvania, with Barbara Shelley, Andrew Keir and Francis Matthews in supporting roles.

In "Dracula, Prince of Darkness," the dreaded vampire is brought back to life by his trusty servant who has been waiting for years for unsuspecting travelers to wander into the castle. The servant uses the blood of one visitor to revitalize Dracula, and the vampire then takes up where he left off, terrorizing everyone who ventures near his eerie domain.

Christopher Lee, a hero to horror film fans all over the world, has thus far on the screen portrayed Frankenstein's monster, Fu Manchu, The Mummy, and has also been the most popular Dracula since Bela Lugosi. As the vampire, he was disintegrated by sunlight in "The Horror of Dracula," but returns to stalk human beings

in this, his most recent effort.

Both "Dracula, Prince of Darkness," and "The Plague of the Zombies," were produced by Hammer Films, an English-based company that is said to be the world's foremost supplier of quality horror films. Actual production facilities are at the organization's Bray Studios located in the picturesque upper reaches of the River Thames. In this bucolic setting, monsters, vampires and ghouls run amuck in studio-built castles and dungeons to delight and frighten horror film fans throughout the world.

Executives at Hammer Films believe their horror films make for outstanding entertainment, and they argue that their type of film is harmless compared to contemporary pictures that deal in excessive violence and brutality. They maintain that in Hammer Films, the villain always gets his come-uppance, the hero always wins, and since horror films are an escape, people are entertained by them but nobody takes them seriously. After all, they say, who can identify with a vampire?

"Dracula, Prince of Darkness" was produced by Anthony Nelson Keys and directed by Terence Fisher from a script by John Sansom.
