1972       Robert Quarry

Star Of Vampire Flicks In 1972 Screen Thriller

Robert Quarry, who has won screen renown for his convincing portrayals as a member of vampire nobility stars again in a new, equally horrific role in "The Deathmaster," American International's new screen shocker which opened in 1972. It was his initial efforts as a merchant of menace in "Count Yorga, Vampire," an earlier American International release which launched the actor into the milieu of the horror film. He had established himself with film producers as a thoroughly trained and tested professional in film and stage appearances, a record which strangely enough featured many roles in Shakespearean plays. But the success of his work at generating goosepimples in that first shocker sparked a second assignment in "The Return Of Count Yorga" and this third project for the releasing company. In "The Deathmaster," Quarry manages to corral a group of hippies into his vampire following, attracting them first by posing as a guru with the power to lead them into everlasting "life" and release them from the

constricting limits of earthly goals. However, it isn't long before his coterie sprout vampire fangs and begin making life hectic for the hero, heroine and more normal neighbors. Produced by Fred Sadoff, the American International release was directed by Ray Danton from a screenplay by R. L. Grove.

The breathtaking beauty of the California coast beaches and forests forms a contrasting background for the shocking activities of a band of deadly vampires in the "The Deathmaster," American International's screen thriller. Filmed amid the rugged and colorful vistas of the Pacific shoreline, the film tells the story of vampire chieftain who takes control of a hippie commune sheltered in the coastal forest and makes its members slaves to his will. ~tobert Quarry, who gained screen fame for his performances as a vampire noble in "Count Yorga, Vampire" and "The Return Of Count Yorga," two earlier American International releases, stars in the film as the deadly leader of the group. Posing as a guru with knowledge of transcendental philosophies, he first fascinates the hippies of the commune with his theories, then initiates each into the befanged legion of the vampire cult. Sharing the cast with Quarry are John Fiedler, Bob Pickett, William Jordan and Betty Anne Rees. Produced by Fred Sadoff, the film was directed by Ray Danton from a screenplay by R. L. Grove.
