Andy Warhol's Dracula
Blood for Dracula

1974       Directed by Paul Morrissey

ANDY WARHOL'S "DRACULA" - A CLASSIC SHOCKER WITH A NEW TWIST

That vampire, Dracula, who came by way of the Carpathians, Germany and a British book to become a Hollywood staple, has about been hammered to bits in his many British incarnations. Now, Paul Morrissey takes a turn at the old bloodsucker and the result is Andy Warhol's "DRACULA".

Bryanston Pictures, the company that released his highly successful, Andy Warhol's "FRANKENSTEIN" in 3D, is now bringing to the public this Warhol-Morrissey handling of the Dracula legend.

Udo Kier is a youngish Dracula in the 1930's. It seems he will die unless he gets virgin blood. So, he has to leave his Transylvanian lair to go to Italy for that, since a Catholic country should have some.

He is accepted by a supposedly rich family, who have four pretty daughters. Actually, the father, played with gusto by Vittorio De Sica, is a gambler and they think this strange man, with his bug-eyed assistant, may be rich and help them.

Dracula

casts no image, but does go out during the day and handles a cross, if gingerly. One girl is sent his way and swears she is a virgin, but poor Dracula is soon vomiting blood in an eerie, funny and unusual scene. It seems Dallesandro, the gardner, has been servicing two of the girls.

Dracula gets sick again, and then decides on a 14-year old who must be a virgin. But Dallesandro, on to him, deflowers the girl first.

The oldest sister really is a virgin, but Dallesandro, who is always preaching proletariat revolution, gets after Dracula with an axe and literally cuts him to pieces before sending in the spike as the eldest sister falls on him to also be skewered.

In addition to performances by the talented Vittorio De Sica and Udo Kier, Andy Warhol's "DRACULA" also boasts a cameo appearance by acclaimed director, Roman Polanski, ("Rosemary's Baby", 'Chinatown").

Also in the cast are Maxine McKendry as the mother of four daughters who are in turn portrayed by European beauties Milena Vukotic, Dominique Darel, Stefania Casini and Silvia Dionisio.

All in all, Andy Warhol's "DRACULA" promises to deliver the same bizarre combination of shock and humor that made millions of moviegoers Warhol fans for the very first time with ANDY WARHOL'S FRANKENSTEIN."
