The Arena
The Naked Warriors

1970       Pam Grier

THE ARENA is set in the decadent days of ancient Rome. Roman soldiers scour the countryside, carrying off beautiful women to be sold as slaves. One of these captive women is the proud, lovely BODICIA (MARGARET MAR KOV), a Druid high priestess. Another is a voluptuous African named MAMAWI (PAM GRIER).

In the Roman town of Brundisium, they and other women are purchased by the owner of a local arena where gladiatorial contests are staged. By day, the women serve the patrons of the arena; at night they warm the beds of gladiators about to die. Internal dissension among the slave-women erupts one day into a wild free-for-all in the kitchen of the owner's villa. This impassioned but comic melee is watched with approval by their master, who sees in it a chance to tickle the jaded palates of the arena patrons.

Henceforth the women will be trained as gladiators, and will challenge each other in the Arena. The first such fight: between women turns out to be a farcical affair-Bodicia easily

subdues the drunken DEIDRE (LUCRETIA LOVE) whose life is then spared by the amused crowd. But soon blood begins to flow and the women are forced to fight to the death.

Horrified by this turn of events, BODICIA and MAMAWI lead a valiant revolt against their masters. Many of their sister-slaves are killed in the uprising, but these two manage to fight their way through the ancient labyrinths and out beyond the city walls to freedom.
